DAVE GROHL Speaks Out On Drumming Stint With QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE
July 25, 2002FOO FIGHTERS mainman Dave Grohl recently spoke to Britain's Rock Sound magazine about his recent stint as the recording and touring drummer for QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE—a tenure that has since ended in order to enable Grohl to focus all his attention on the forthcoming FOO CD.
"QOTSA has always been a revolving cast of musicians and musicians come and they go, musicians contribute and musicians split," explained Grohl. "The foundation of the band has always been Josh [Homme, guitars, vocals] and Nick [Oliveri, bass, vocals] and I've been their fourth or fifth drummer. I went in to make the record with them last summer and originally I was only going to do three songs with them and I wound up doing the whole album with them and that was it.
"FOO FIGHTERS started making a record and I started helping QOTSA find another drummer but then I thought I should probably do one show with them, I mean I haven't played drums in like eight years I should do one show with QUEENS before they get another drummer. So we booked a show at The Troubadour in Los Angeles, played the show, it was fucking spectacular, it was great, it was awesome, and I thought, you know, I'd be stupid not to do this again and since I'm fortunate to do whatever the fuck I want to do all the time, I was like, 'Why don't I do that for a while.' I was never leaving the FOO FIGHTERS and was never joining QOTSA—it was like, 'Hey man, I'm going to take a break from making my record and I'm going to go and do this for a while'. In the grand scheme of things and the big picture, four or five months just isn't that big of a deal, so it was just a matter of, 'hey, we just made this kick ass record so let's get off on playing it for a while', and we had some fucking amazing shows."
Meanwhile, a replacement for Grohl in QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE has yet to be announced. Said Grohl: "I don't know yet I'm not sure but I tell you it's the one gig every fucking drummer wants! People' ll call me and they totally take the side roads to get to the fucking centre, until finally I'm like, 'Dude, I'll put in a good word for you, don't worry about it!'"
